Why is Israel called "Our Ally"? by a Reader from Washington, DC, posted on Tuesday, Sep 30, 2003 Ever wondered why US politicians like to so often proclaim the mantra "Israel is our ally, I will always stand by Israel, etc."? Ever wondered why the US continues to grant Israel billions of dollars each year despite Israel's behavior and despite international condemnation of its actions? Then you must read this book, for in here you will find the answers. "The Passionate Attachment" explores the intricate relationship between the US and Israel, on many levels, and the sources and roots of this special relationship and passionate attachment. The text is very well-written and reads with the suspense of a good detective story, except it describes actual history. Also Recommended: The Samson Option by Seymour Hersh, and They Dare to Speak out by Paul Findley.

It takes daring to read this! by a Reader from Washington, DC, posted on Tuesday, Sep 30, 2003 Written by a former congressman, this book is a massive compendium detailing the enormous influence of the Israeli Lobby in the USA. Released for a third time with an update all the way to the turn of the millennium, this is definitely the authoritative study of the working of American politics, and the ease with each the US political system can be manipulated by another country. I have only read the second edition, and actually am seriously considering getting the third just to see what Findley has added to the book - it's been almost a decade and a half since the second edition, so this update is long overdue. The book is very well-written, and very engaging as the picture unfolds like a detective story, chapter by chapter. The issues discussed are very relevant, examining the influence of a foreign country in every aspect of American life: in Congress and the White House, in the press, in the universities and churches, and throughout America. It reads like a who's who in politics and society, with quotations and interviews with everyone of relevance, even including many prominent American Jews who dare to speak out against the Israeli lobby and reject having to toe the lobby line. From the start, the author makes a sharp distinction between being pro-Israel (as he defines himself) and being "pro-Israel-right-or-wrong", as "They Dare to Speak Out" appears to categorize the Zionist lobby. It is definitely an influential book and highly recommended reading. In all fairness, I did not give it 5 stars for one reason: the book left me quite depressed about the state of affairs of this nation, and I didn't like the impression it inadvertently paints of an all-powerful lobby. For one thing, as "They Dare to Speak Out" points out repeatedly, a large part of the Lobby's influence is psychological, yet the whole book tends to reinforce that "almighty lobby" image, which means the book is self-defeating, in a way. Perhaps the 3rd edition did something about it. In any case, if you haven't read any of the earlier editions, it is worth to just buy it and take a look. You might feel overwhelmed, but you will learn a lot of important things, too.

The Samson Option: Israel's Nuclear Arsenal and American Foreign Policy

Great Detective Work! by a Reader from Washington, DC, posted on Tuesday, Sep 30, 2003 As is necessary for a subject as shrouded in secrecy, the author must do a considerable amount of detective work in order to arrive at a deep understanding. "The Samson Option" is exemplary in this style of book. Written like a detective story and with not a page lacking suspense, this book rivals any of the best Sherlock Holmes or the best modern-day thrillers. Yet, this is no fiction! It is apparent from the thorough notes that the author hasn't spared an ounce of meticulous research about such an important topic as nuclear weaponry. In it we learn about espionage tales, about cold war alliances, and about nuclear blackmail. Does Israel have nuclear weapons? If so how did they obtain them? What is the United States position on this, and why does it matter? Who funded the Israeli bomb? "The Samson Option" answers all these questions and many more, but in the process generates many more questions and mysteries that remain to be solved. Truly thought-provoking and enjoyable reading!

Who Controls the Middle East by a Reader from Maryland, posted on Tuesday, Sep 30, 2003 Before reading this book, I was possibly naive in my outlook, thinking the Middle East was composed of separate countries that contend fairly through diplomacy and war for control of its fate. Today my eyes have been opened. For instance, I learned of a Mossad ploy to assassinate a PLO representative, just as he was about to make contact with Israeli diplomats and talk peace in 1981. Barring that attempt by the PLO to prevent war, the Mossad eased the conscience of the Israeli government as it launched an all-out war in Lebanon that left tens of thousands of victims. The same Mossad we learn planted false messages and bombs to blame on Libya, starting an age-old animosity between Libya and the United States that lasted almost to this day, based on little but falsified evidence. Written by an ex-Mossad operative, this book exposes (with a horrified tone) how even the government of Israel itself has little control over the Mossad. Intriguing reading.
